I was just curious if you all prefer to make your own potting mix or buy? I am running into issues with aeration in my soil, which leads to my soils not drying out properly and all the issues that come along with it. The room I have the majority of my plants in is fairly high in humidity (south side sunroom). I have been using a store bought potting mix for most of my plants but I just don’t feel there is enough aeration in it. Any suggestions of potting mix you all use? I didn’t know if I could add pumice stones to the soil of all my plants or not? Thanks for any advice you have, I’m a fairly new plant mom! :)

Personally I add orchid bark and perlite to my potting compost. Roughly the same quantity of soil, bark and perlite is my go-to mix and adjusting it according to the particular plant needs. You can also add sand, pumice, charcoal and several other ingredients.

I use equal parts fox farm ocean forest potting mix, orchid bark, and perlite for most of my houseplants. It drains well but doesn’t dry out too fast. For my succulents and cacti, I use equal parts succulent/cacti potting mix and perlite :)

Team custom mix 🙌 lol. Tailoring the soil for each plant is one of the fun parts of plant keeping for me. I probably buy more types of amendments than I need 😅 but I like trying different ones If the pumice you already have is broken up small and tumbled smooth, that would be perfect for many plants! Perlite is also a top favorite amendment for many people. Orchid bark or coco husk chips are pretty popular too, but some people don’t like that they breaks down eventually. Leca is slightly more niche, but makes a great moisture-retentive aerator. Those will probably be your top options for making that soil more chunky and breathable

I was leaning toward making my own soil because I love repotting and do all things dirt, so I appreciate the tips! I already purchased the soil amendments so I can get mixing this weekend! 😁 Thanks again for all the advice!
