Hey guys my Terrarium water smelled like raw egg. It doesn’t have a drainage hole at the bottom and I noticed that a few of the plants inside of it is dying. Not only that the water is overfilling when I start to pour new water in u notice that the old water wasn’t absorbed by the soil? I’m not too sure. Some of the leaves look fine and healthy but I don’t know what to do next I’m scared for its life haha I love this thing. I use to pour water directly into the bottom but now I’m afraid so I just misted it today to increase humidity. Should I mist it daily to insure it has enough humidity? What do I do… to make sure that it strives and stay happy it’s my first terrarium

I believe it is best to water Terrariums only when the soil is totally dry (almost changes color due to dryness) and watering directly on the soil is good. I use filtered water

In addition to Ana’s advice I used to water then flip onto its side to help drain excess water. They are a bit of a nightmare to maintain but very pretty to look at

if it smells bad check for root rot i had that in one of mine i cant tell but there should be a drainage layer at the bottom so the roots of the plant arent sitting in water as the cycle of water kinda evaporates and is absorbed if u want you can do more research on open terrariums but it looks really cool imo!!!!

I would be tempted to repot your terrarium. Put a thin layer of sand and another thin layer of charcoal at the bottom with a good potting soil on top of that. The sand charcoal and soil should occupy 1/3 of your container. The smell is coming from the water and possibly root rot. It looks lush and full right now and I'm not sure what to advise as far as the plants. Arrowhead plant gets very large and is generally not suitable for very long in a terrarium. You might consider putting that in its own pot and choosing another smaller plant for your terrarium. It really depends on what kind of a look you want and how much maintenance you want to do. Plants that do well in a terrarium not only like humidity but they tolerate a good deal of pruning so that you can keep them at an appropriate size.

When you water a terrarium, especially a small one like yours, you would do it by the tablespoon. And open terrarium requires a little more water then one that is closed but still not very much.

It looks like there's not enough air flow to get good circulation and evaporation. So you should trim some plants back as they over grow
