Does anyone here use self‑watering pots? I’m trying to figure out which plants actually do well in them. Are there any plants you wouldn’t put in a self‑watering setup? I’m still pretty new to all this and apparently I’m an over‑waterer, so I’m trying to learn before I accidentally drown everything. 😬

I use a combination of traditional and self-watering pots. Repotme has a really nice selection. They are more pricey but work much better than ones I found on Amazon. I live between two apartments so I find for some plants it makes a difference if there is an extended period if left alone. My succulent plants do better in traditional pots. My spider plant for one loves its sel-watering pot.

I don’t think snake plant, ZZ plant, succulents would do good in them. My Purple Hearts love self watering and same with the spider like it also

I bought an orchid from EasyPlants and it’s doing great. Of course it’s just been three months so we’ll see!

My money tree has been loving its self watering pot, I do keep it in a tropical soil/cactus soil mix and it loves it! For the “self-watering” I put the string through two holes in the bottom so you have two “tails” hanging out of the bottom and a loop in the bottom about 3” up in the pot and then I backfilled! With all that said, I also noticed my marble queen has been doing good with one and some of my philodendrons 😊

I think it depends on the roots of the plant. Thinner roots cannot hold much water such as begonias, alocasias, and the El Choco red. Now, some people are having success growing any plant in a self watering planter. Just depends on the conditions of your household such as humidity, temperature, and light exposure. Try a few and see.

Just make sure your substrate is airy and breathable so the plant can have good oxygen flow.

I use a few different types of self-watering pots and a few different types of media in them. I have peace lilies, two types of syngonium, and pothos doing fabulously in semi-hydro (LECA or pon). I also have a calathea, syngonium, and a few pothos in a super chunky mix of bark, perlite, LECA, coco chips, and a small amount of tree fern fiber, and they're doing great too. I use each type of pot as directed, with one exception: I switched the provided cords out with strips of microfiber cloth of about the same dimensions. It's one of the few things I saw online that I was entirely sold on without having to experiment first.
