I need help with my pothos Porter. He is a golden pothos and about a few months ago, he went from flourishing to loosing leaves. I repotted and trimmed him and took extra car of him but he's down to no leaves, no roots, and two stems! I'm worried he's dead but he's still green so I dont want to loose hope yet, I just don't know what to try next! Do I need a special fertilizer? Should I try growing him in just water? Help please!

If he has no roots, you will have to try propagating him as a last resort. You need to cut in between nodes and place the pieces in water wait for them to grow roots. If you are not familiar with the process, there are many tutorials on YouTube or you can google it. He must have developed root rot; unless you see some type of pest.

Hi! I would recommend just cutting up the nodes and trying to propagate if you can. Sadly it looks like it went through some rot so there’s not really much left to do when it’s at this point☹️. Don’t feel discouraged though, it happens to us all and sometimes starting over completely is for the best!😊

If you’re wedded to trying to keep him without propagating - downsize the pot big time! Tbh pothos are veryyyy forgiving so as long as you have some sort of root left you should be fine. I would definitely cut off all of the ones that have rotted (if that’s truly what happened) and I’d pot in a VERY chunky airy soil mix that will let her dry out fast. If you decide to repot I’d give the roots a couple of days to settle before watering at all! If it was indeed root rot I’d suggest getting a clear plastic pot with lots of drainage so you can keep an eye on the roots! Once the roots have established then he’ll start growing leaves again. Best of luck and happy gardening! Let me know if you need anything else lovey!

If you want to propagate I’d definitely try it but make sure you let the stems dry out before you place them in water or you’ll get root rot again ): they’re very easy to propagate so if you want to go that route you totally can!

Right now I have him in a combination of succulent and potting soil. Is that chunky enough? Or do I need something different? I'm not super knowledgeable on soil types😅

Girl I got you!! Okay so mine thrive in a mix. I’d do about 1/4 tropical 1/4 regular 1/4 orchid bark and 1/4 perlite! This has made my plants grow like weeds!!!!! If you don’t want to make your own mix you totally can use regular potting mix, you’d just wait quite a bit longer in between waterings! Regular potting soil holds water a lot longer so it’s easier if you don’t want to water as often. Pothos are very very resilient so know that you definitely have hope for the little guy. They’re very easy to over water but are relatively drought tolerant so if you think it’s time to water, check the top of the soil, should be about 1-2inches of dry soil and then you can water! I hope this helps and please ask more questions if you need to!! Let’s get your little guy back to thriving!!

It looks like it’s in a pot too big and too tall for it. The tall side will block light causing yellowing and leaf drop. The large diameter will hold excess soil and water that rots the roots. Additionally, the decorative rocks slow the soil from drying and promotes root rot. I agree with the suggestions to crop and propagate what is left. Clean off all the soil after cutting off the roots to prevent spreading bacteria to the prop water. Disinfect by rinsing the cuttings and tools in hydrogen peroxide. Change the water each week or when cloudy. Fertilize with diluted fertilizer when roots appear. Plant when the roots are at least 2 inches long. Replant in soil with lots of perlite for good drainage. Start with a 4 inch wide pot. Place the cuttings in bright indirect light for 6-8 hours a day or use a grow light for 12-14 hours a day. Water the plant when the soil completely dries out. Do not use a strict watering schedule without verifying the soil is dry. Reduce fertilizing in colder months if growth slows. 🪴🍀
