Hi all! I’m kind of a new plant parent to be. I’ve had plants before but I have a brown thumb, sad to admit. I think the only plant that survived in my house was an ivy and that was like 20 years ago. Anyway, my son is the green thumb person in the house and both of us want to add plants in the house which he’s promised to be the one to care for them all. We have 3 cats so of course we’re looking to get nontoxic plants for the house. One of our problems is natural lighting. The living room, kitchen and my son’s room all get some natural lighting. My room has ZERO windows but I still want something in my room except I don’t want to have to invest in expensive artificial lights. Can anyone suggest a plant that might survive in a windowless room that’s also pet safe? Thanks in advance

Plastic would be your only choice unfortunately.

Doesn’t need to be an expensive grow light… you could get any attractive light fixture and add a full spectrum bulb… even a regular bulb is better than nothing! Regarding plants that are pet safe and low light tolerant, how about Pellionia repens or Pellionia pulchra?

Strongly advise getting one of the cheap plant shelving units with lights that you can attach to the unit, makes using grow lights seem less daunting and ive found those light strips work just as well as my clip on grow lights

Unfortunately no plants will survive without light. Even “low light tolerant” plants don’t, they just die slower so they’ll “last longer” in those conditions, but they will not do well at all. Sorry to break it to you.

I have 30 plants in my master bed and bath upstairs with only one window total, so it can be done but with help. In the bathroom, specifically, which is windowless area I have 10 and they are where I keep my tropical plants and the ones that have been personally victimized by my cats. I have a total of two grow lights. They just plug-in and you can set them on timers, but I just leave them on all the time. And then when I get up in the morning, I leave the bathroom and bedroom light on, so they at least get some artificial light assist during the day. As for the toxicity, you’ll probably wanna look at each one. I have some plants. My cats have never touched. I have others they repeatedly attack. I’ll post some photo comments of what I have.

Tradescantia silver inch plant And to its right, an arrowhead Both have thrive and I’ve had no problems. You can see one of my two grow lights that I think was 10 bucks on Amazon.

Even the furthest from the light in the dark alcove, where my toilet is, this little asparagus fern is pretty happy and has grown about five times its original size.
