Hi. I'm a new plant mum to an areca plant. I'm not great at keeping plants i must admit and even managed to somehow kill a cactus. Any kind of advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance

The #1 way of killing plants is overwatering them. So one thing you can do is buy a moisture meter—before you water, make sure it’s not sopping wet one inch below the surface. For palms, I think the #2 killer would be cold. Don’t crack that window on the right when it’s chilly or even breezy out, she won’t be happy.
いいね 1件Thanks for the advice Matt. As I say I'm not the best at keeping plants. I was worried that the space may also be a little dark too ? I have purchased a hydrometer and will look for a moisture meter too. Silly question but how much water would you typically use to water the plant weekly ? Sorry for all the questions

No worries! That’s what we’re all here for, right? I can’t tell how bright the room is, but if leaf tips start browning or leaves fall off, you can try scooching it to the right in front of that window and see if it perks up. I think most palms are less light-hungry than other plants, but I don’t know about arecas specifically.

In terms of how much water and how often, here’s what I’d do. Give planta all the details on your plant. Let it suggest when to water, but before you do, check the moisture in the soil. If it’s wet, snooze. If you’re not sure—also snooze. When you do water, some people just take a plant that size over to the bathtub and drench it thoroughly. You want to get the soil wet all the way through and then don’t water again until it’s mostly dried out.
いいね 1件Thanks Matt. Yes it certainly is. It's seems to be doing OK atm and the room gets quite bright when the sun is shining through. The plant is to the left of a bay window, but I can certainly move it over if need be, or move it over to the other side of the room. I've misted it this morning and its suggested I water it tomorrow, but wow , didn't realise it would need that much water! Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.
