I have a money plant and I’ve had it for years. I have propagated the pups and reef planted pieces that might have broken off. Overall, the years I have had it it’s doing great. But my question is why do the saucers curl? They don’t lay concave with a little flatness to them. Thank you so much. I can’t complain about it. It’s doing fine.

The curled appearance of your succulent "saucer" pieces, which should be flat and concave, indicates they are likely dehydrated. This curling is the plant's way of conserving water when it's not getting enough moisture from the soil or air. It's important to provide enough water and bright, indirect light to keep the pieces hydrated and encourage new root growth.

Common Reasons for Succulent Curling: ® • Dehydration: This is the most common cause of curling, as the plant is trying to reduce water loss. • Insufficient Water: The propagating pieces might not be getting enough water from their new soil. • Drying Out: If the pieces were exposed to too much air or not placed in suitable soil after propagating, they can dry out. What to Do: • 1. Check Moisture: Feel the soil for moisture. It should be lightly moist, but not waterlogged. 2. Provide Water: Water the propagating pieces until the soil is lightly moist, but allow excess water to drain. 3. Adjust Lighting: Place the pieces in bright, indirect light, which is ideal for succulents. 4. Maintain Environment: Ensure the environment is not too hot or dry, as this can accelerate dehydration.

Yes, that helps greatly! I might want to put it in a different potting medium. I have it in a well draining soil that’s very chunky. Have you experienced any certain soils that work with it?

May I ask what’s the name of your plant?

Chinese money plant is the name we all use, but it’s a Pilea Peperomiodes.

Where do you have it place in your house? I’m thinking on getting one, but lighting might be an issue

I have mine in the middle of an east, west, and south window. Because it’s summer/fall the light is not that much. When winter comes I’ll pull it back. It works best with indirect light. But as seasons change things have to move. It’s a bit of a drama queen.

Potting Mixture: Equal parts of regular potting soil and cacti soil is perfect for the Pilea. I'll sometimes add some perlite or pumice to give it a bit more drainage.

Thank you so much. I do make that mix for all my plants. I will take mine apart and see what’s going on.

I personally prefer to use premium Cacti and Succulent soil potting mix for growing my Pilea plants. It doesn't hold too much water or moisture and it's perfect in assisting with good drainage. I also mix in a small portion of perlite (roughly 10%, ie. One part perlite to nine parts soil). Perlite is great for soil aeration and drainage. In the warmer months, you can feed the soil with a liquid fertiliser once a month. Prior to repotting your Pilea plants in fresh soil, always ensure you carefully observe and inspect the soil for any fungus gnats or other pests. If the new soil is already infected, it can cause plant problems and potential stress. Either treat the soil or grab a new bag!

I just got one of these plants and it seems to be happy where he is. I might change the soil, though, because it is starting to compact.

When I got the plant, of course it was small, compact, very sturdy. But as it’s gotten bigger, pups happen so I’ve propagated the pups. Replanted them or shared them with other people. But overtime the mother plant just looks sad. So I don’t know if it’s just time or what. Definitely let me know how yours turns out if you repot it. I’m gonna repot mine today.
