Hi everyone! I’m new to the plant world as I just got my first ever batch on Friday. I have 2 key questions. Thanks so much in advance. It’s really important to me to take good care of them, but I have gotten a couple different instructions, so I’m coming here to ask for help from the plant nerds, in hopes I can become one myself someday! Attached are my plants - 9 in total. 8 outdoor on patio and 1 indoor in front of window. They were all just re-potted. Question #1: The person who sold me the plants gave me directions to water all the outdoor plants every day when it’s over 45° out. About once a week for the indoor tree. However, the app has watering periods from 2-10 days per plant. Which one is correct? Question #2: And this could tie to question 1… but how much water to put each watering? The app says to pour until water comes out of the drainage hole. However other places I see tell me to go until the first 2 inches of soil are moist. Can someone help me with how to make sure these plants have long happy lives? Additional curiousity questions below: - He said no watering under 32°, and once a week in 32-45° weather. Does that sound right? - Do they need fertilizer done at the times noted on the app? THANK YOU X1000!

    I do not know enough on outdoor plants to give advise. What I have learned as a new plant nerd myself (I've kept my plants alive for over a year now so I self-proclaim to be a plant nerd) is that that plants will tell you what they need. When I get a new plant I look it up. See if it likes to dry out or stay moist all the time. From there I use a moisture stick to tell me how moist or dry it is. This is prob completly different for outdoor plants and totally useless to you! Sorry. Ill be trying outdoor plants next year and hopefully coming to you for some advice! Best of luck to you!

    Hi there! I work at a plant nursery and here’s my advice. With arbrovites and most evergreens- yellowing of the leaves from the inside out means water issues. Yellowing of the leaves from the outside inward is a light issue. When plants go in the ground, the roots detect moisture and reach towards it (but that is not the only way they grow) so when they are in planters or landscapes, we recommend watering them fully. Since yours look like they are in pots, I recommend watering them all the way through and watering again when a few inches of soil on top are dry. (Usually everyday when they are in full sun, now that it is getting cooler (at least where I live) it may be every 2 days) Someone else commented this as well- but they will usually tell you what they need. For pruning limelight hydrangeas- make sure to do it in the late winter or early spring, cutting a few inches off and making strong base. These hydrangeas make their blooms on entirely new wood growing up from the base, so cutting them during their bloom time could risk cutting off existing buds, resulting in a stick of a hydrangea for the current season. For fertilizing- we fertilize to push new growth. During really hot periods or close to winter, we stop fertilizing. The fertilizer tells the plant to put out new growth and fertilizing in the wrong times makes the plant focus on new growth instead of protecting itself. Hope these help!       thank you so so much! This is definitely helpful and I really appreciate you taking the time to help me! For the indoor tree, obviously, I can’t water that one all the way through because I don’t want the water to escape the pot, but as long as the first couple inches of soil remain moist, that should be OK?

      The only issue is if it becomes soggy or waterlogged. It’s hard to tell if you’ve fully watered without seeing water drain from the bottom. On hot and windy days I would say it will be just fine, but for consistent weather I’m not sure! You could definitely try and then see how it responds.

      It’s actually good for the water to “escape the pot”. Water sitting in a pot is a fantastic recipe for all sorts of problems- root rot and fungus gnats mainly. Definitely water until it comes out of the bottom. For a council tree, you’ll want to wait for the soil to dry about halfway before watering again. Moisture meters help great with this, but you can also use a long toothpick or other wood.
