i decided to run an experiment on the best set up after propagation. so there’s the soil pot (Gwen) and the perlite/water pot (Myles). both were the same size when i started and both got the same amount of lighting conditions. Gwen in the soil is healthy but slow growing. (i’m aware there’s no drainage holes in the glass but i can see everything that’s going on inside so it’s easy to monitor. no root rot here !!) Myles in the perlite and water grew significantly faster. roots and leaves ! long story short, i will be doing hydroponics after propagation for my spider plants teehee

I’m wondering if the same pots had been used the same size exact pots it might have been different. Seems the disadvantage to one was no water drainage and that could have changed it up a little. I could be wrong. That was a neat test though. Think I’ll try it with some plants that I got today - as I bought two the same. This is making me curious now lol 😊

they hold they same amount just different shapes ! and i can see the lack of drainage being a minor factor but i can see when i’ve watered it thoroughly without being water logged since it’s small and clear ! next time i run an experiment maybe i’ll switch things up a bit to make it seem more fair but imo this was pretty fair :) id like to see the results of your experiment !

I have a spider plant obsession. All in standard potting mix (with peat) and extra perlite. All pots have drainage. They thrive because the plants have very thick roots that soak up a lot of water and I don’t ration the amount of water the plant gets. Your soil looks like a chunky mix which doesn’t hold a lot of water like a moss based standard potting soil mix. I think if the soil mix was different, then, the plant growth rate would be the same if not higher in the soil. The roots can take in more water. Plus, the organic nutrients in the soil adds a boost not found in perlite. It’s just my experience.
