Needs distilled water and 60%+ humidity otherwise those whites will brown. One of my favorite plants, good luck!
0 Mi piaceThanks so much! So far, I have a good history with calatheas in our home so here’s hoping she’s just as happy here!

This is by far the most challenging Calathea I have ever owned, glad you have experience because this one is one of those super rewarding challenges in life.
0 Mi piaceThat’s a helpful heads up, as I’ve loved my calatheas and have wanted to keep adding to my collection. Hence this one. It came in tree fern fiber, which I am unfamiliar with as a medium. Has yours had a particular favorite for a potting medium?
0 Mi piaceI also added a pebble tray today, in an attempt to increase humidity levels. It came home from the nursery with some crispy edges so it will be hard to tell for a bit how it is faring here.

Those crisps come quickly, I’m guessing on the whites. Pebble trays unfortunately don’t do enough. Figuring out how to keep my place at 60% humidity was the only way I could stop that from happening

1 mi piaceI love these! And I agree with evil plant dad, definitely more finicky than my other calatheas, but so worth it. Watch out for spider mites, mine are prone to them so I treat for them regularly. Yours is absolutely gorgeous!
0 Mi piaceAh good tip on the spider mites. I’ll keep a close eye. Thank you! Same question as for EvilPlantDad: It came in tree fern fiber, which I am unfamiliar with as a medium. Has yours had a particular favorite for a potting medium?
0 Mi piaceI’m still experimenting with what they like best, so unfortunately I don’t have a great answer for you. However, I would also leave it in whatever it came in while it adjusts to your house, it’s generally not recommended to repot right away unless you really have to. My calatheas that I did repot with regular potting soil plus perlite don’t seem to love it but more tolerate it, so I’ll be looking a better medium when it comes time to repot. I don’t think it liked the added fertilizer that some soils have, so I’m going to look for a more natural one.
