Hey all! I have this Purple Heart spiderwort I got from my aunt as a cutting back in April that I had propagated, and it’s been growing very well. I had the chopstick in to keep it growing vertically but noticed it was growing tall and thin. She said they normally grow down and hang so I didn’t have to keep it propped up. Well, I can’t keep it propped up anymore unless I tie it. I’m wondering what the normal characteristic/look of this plant is? Do I let it hang? It’s just one piece so I think that’ll look weird. Can I cut at the stem to propagate more pieces of the plant to grow? I’d appreciate any help or advice how/what to do with this plant moving forward. Thanks!

It does look a little leggy, I would trim it after the section (node) hanging over the pot and either put the cutting in water to root or use a little rooting hormone and put it in the soil with the other plant. I marked the pic in red where I would trim it. Happy gardening!👍🏼

Agreed ^ you’ll get a fuller pot which is what I figure you’re looking for 😁

Thanks!! That is what I’d like 😊 do you think I can get two or three cuttings out of this (I marked in white other nodes to cut under)? Or would that be too many small ones?

If there are nodes go for it 😁

I agree that cutting it will help get a fuller pot. I would address the fungus gnats other pests on the yellow sticky trap. Use Mosquito Bits in the water every time to kill if larvae in the soil, breaking the lifecycle of the pests. Let the soil fully dry out before watering. The plant holds more water than the typical hard wood plant. Give it more light, at least 8 hours, to get deeper colors and faster growth.

Thanks for the tips! I have used mosquito bits before. I think I should replace the sticky traps, they are old and I don’t really see any gnats still flying around 🤞

Just did some cuttings! I hope I did it right 🙈 Do I have to let the cut ends callus before putting in water?
