Super basic watering questions from a newbie! I'm new to houseplants and I want to know how people water their plants. Like, logistically. 😆 Do you take the water to the plants, with a watering can? Or do you bring the plants to the sink? If you use a watering can, what do you do about the extra water that drains out of the pot into the saucer? Do you dump it into a bucket or something? What about really big plants? How do you get the water out of the saucer if the plant is too big to easily lift? How much time does it take to water all your plants? Tell me how you water your plants, please! 🙏 (These feel like kind of silly questions, but I also know there are people who don't know how to pick up a cat or hold a baby. Everyone's a beginner at something!)

I read that you’re supposed to toss the water that drains out of the bottom to prevent the spread of potential diseases 🤷🏽‍♀️

I bottom water my plants. So I bring them into my kitchen where I keep large tin foil casserole dishes. I fill those with water and set my plants in them until the top layer of soil is moist. This method can take a while depending on the plant. My plants in terra cotta take a while to soak up with the bottom watering method so sometimes I just spray them in the sink till water drains out. Then I put the plants on a drainage tray until they’re not dripping then I put them back in their place. I do not yet have any plants too big to move but once I do I will do like PlantyAnn does.

Another vote for bringing everybody into the kitchen - thank you! And finally a use for those giant tin casserole trays 😆

I carry my plants to the sink and water them until water comes out the bottom and let them drain for a bit. For my bigger plants I carry them to the tub or shower and pour water on them until it comes out the bottom. About every 4th/5th watering I put a bunch in the tub and give them a shower and let them drain really well. I use the app as a guide only and always check the soil with my finger first so I don’t overwater. I have a good number of plants but only spend a few minutes a day watering because they’re on different schedules. Today I have a snow day so my plants will get some extra love.

Hm I’ll add how I do my watering since everyone’s seems a bit different, most if not all my plants (even big tree like ones) have both a hole at the bottom for drainage and a saucer(/decorative pot) for collecting extra water. I fill a one gallon watering can about 3-4 times for let’s say 10-20 of my plants that day and I pour on top with enough water that fills the pot about halfway before it’s overflowing, smaller plants require less water bigger plants more, and depending on the plant I will decide if it’s okay to leave the water in the saucer for it to soak up OR if I should definitely not let it sit in water like a succulent or something like that. For example my big fiddle leaf fig tree always gets a thorough watering that fills the entire pot and has a saucer that never moves but also never overflows so I’m sure there some excess water that it’s just always soaking up
