Papo

I’ve had a papaya tree or palm for two years. It has given us delicious papayas in abundance every year. However, it is growing fast and we think next year we will not be able to reach the fruits. I saw on line that if you top off the tree, it will stop growing tall and still bear fruits and leaves. I did it but the tree lost all of its leaves and started growing from the top again. I simply don’t see how to keep it short and easy to reach the fruits. Does anyone?

😆 yes, but i don’t think I will be able to find a 40 feet ladder. That’s how tall these trees get. I read the taller the papaya tree, the fewer fruits it bears.

Oh crazy! You might be able to chop from The top to prevent it growing higher, and stimulate growth outward?

You can cut the top and cap it off. Papaya trees have hollow centers like bamboo except bamboo has compartments. Papaya can build up stale water, bugs and small reptiles in the hollow center. So, find a way to cap the cut end to make it water tight. I’ve used a coffee can to cap a tropical almond tree since the trunk was solid. The can blocked regrowth at the top by blocking light. Also, google Dwarfing Papaya Tree for several methods to shorten a papaya tree. Good luck 🍀🪴
