My Cathalea Freddie is bad shape so I’m repotting and cleaning up roots to see if can’t save her.. anyone know what these bulbous roots are? They were growing out the bottom of the pot she was purchased in. I’m assuming that means she needed to be repotted. Should I keep them?

Hi! I am not sure what kind of plant this is; but, I can say I have a Shamrock I recently repotted and it also have tubular roots. Oh yes, keep them. They are like the super roots. They will sprout up the plant again. Plant in semi moist soil and wait a few days. Once you see them pop up, mist your soil. Good luck!

many prayer plants have tubers underground to store water. since they are such thirsty plants this helps them survive the occasional drought. but i’m confused as to why you removed all the soil? was it rotting? the only time this is necessary is when transferring from soil to a hydroponic or semi-hydro set up. removing all the soil causes severe stress for the plant as it’s impossible to avoid removing the root hairs attached to the soil as well. if it was rotting, i’d recommend caring for root rot a bit differently in the future. gently shake away most of the loose soil, and then use a pair of clean shears to cut away any black or mushy roots. repot in a chunky, airy mix. based on the appearance of these roots, either the media it was in was much too dense (like greenhouse soil or standard potting soil) or the plant was watered too often. be sure at least the top 1/2” or so of soil is dry before watering again to prevent root rot

no problem, i hope i was able to help. spraying 3% (topical) hydrogen peroxide on the roots is an effective but not always necessary step for treating root rot too
