Does anyone have recommendations on how to protect outdoor container plants from the cold? I don’t want my babies to die. It doesn’t snow here, but it does get below freezing occasionally.

Cover them as best as you can with a tarp or frost blanket
1 likeWhat if they’re big? I have a banana tree specifically that I don’t want to die but putting something over it is tricky because it’s tall and I’m short and also because the leaves tend to bend when there’s any weight on them

We bought one of those half green houses from Amazon. Works great been standing for two seasons.

0 likesIt will be difficult to completely protect a tall banana tree. My trees grow to 10 feet each summer (Zone 9). I get about 14 days of hard freezes in Feb/Jan. Freezing weather kills the trunk but not the root system. You can put about 6 inches of mulch around the base to keep the root system from freezing. Cover the base and mulch with wool shipping blankets or other heavy blankets. Cover the blankets with painter’s plastic drop cloth. Secure with stones/bricks to block wind. The ground stays warmer than the air. So, the banana tree roots won’t die in a week of freezing temperatures. The trunk will die. Remove the blanket and plastic when temps warm or the plant will steam in full sun! My plants start growing back almost immediately after the dead trunk is removed.
