Depending on how long ago this occurred, it could be from injury or direct sun. Are there any other details you can provide regarding its recent care?

How big of a pot did you repot it into? And what size was it in before? Did it have a pretty good root system?

It was in a 4 inch pot when I purchased it this past April. I repotted it into a 1 gallon nursery pot and it has easily more than quadrupled in size. It was a very healthy specimen, but I don’t recall any specifics about the root system.

I agree with Shirley. It looks sunburnt. It may be fertilizer burn if the plant was not in direct sunlight.
