Found this yellow stuff on my neighbor’s tradescantia. Is this mold? If so, is it harmful? The plant overall isn’t doing well and I’m wondering if it’s salvageable. Thank you!

It’s either mold or some type of fungus. I would completely remove all of the soil. If the roots are rotted or otherwise bad, then chop and propagate the stems. If the roots are fine, then just spray them down with diluted hydrogen peroxide and repot into new soil.

I’ve had fungus like this and it actually sprouted mushrooms eventually. Change the soil up, wash the pot even maybe.

This is slime mold, and it happens with the natural breakdown of the organic material in the soil. It’s actually pretty cool if you look it up. Doesn’t harm the plant though!

Hi, I’ve had what looks like the same fungus in a couple of my plants and it eventually sprouted mushrooms as well. I did some research to find out what and why they were popping up and found several articles that indicated them to be common and surprisingly benign if not helpful. They are Leucocoprinus birnbaumii. “Small and varying shades of yellow... These are so frequently seen in greenhouses and homes that the common names are plantpot dapperling and flowerpot parasol… they are what is called a saprotrophic mushroom, which just means that they feed on dead organic matter. This means that they will feed on the dead roots, decaying potting material, insects, etc, and then release the material back into the soil in a way that can be used by the plant as food.” Taken from House Plant Hobbyist ‘Why They Are a Good Sign’
