Does anyone know what this is? It was given to me by a friend and is apparently some sort of orchid?

It is an orchid. It just does not have any stems.

I think that’s a Phalaenopsis orchid. I can’t really tell from the picture but it looks that it’s potted into soil if it is I would recommend to repot it into orchid soil because regular soil will suffocate the root and they will rot. I normally repot my orchid into clear pots and put them in a decorative pot that way I can look at the roots and see when they need to be water.

From the pictures I can definitely tell that is healthy and hydrated because the leaves look very stiff and hard not leathery if the leaves get very floppy and very leathery then that means that the plan is getting dehydrated so there may be a problem with the roots.

I would recommend to watch the Orchid Girl on YouTube her videos helped learn a lot about orchid if you’re unsure about something. Thanks to her I’ve been able to keep my 7 orchids healthy and happy.
