After a year of telling everyone that a Dremel is required for pot modification, I spent $6 on this pack of diamonds bits and pulled out my 35-year old drill. While using this combo would be a drag for glass etching etc., it was fine here. I didn’t electrocute myself, at least. Yeah, it is a little sloppy Joe on the bottom. It took a minute to figure out if this was actually going to work. The only bit needed is the one with the ball end. ps I had this species a few years ago but repotted it to death. I found it again in the lotto of what Costa Farms sends to Home Depot in October.

Ok I always wondered if it was worth trying to drill a costa farms pot, now I know.

I’m most proud of this one. It took a v long time to get through an inch of glass. It’s kind of nerve-racking - for me, anyway. Put it in the sink, turn on slow drip of water, put left hand next to right hand, which is grinding through glass. Haha anyway.

For real. If I had four wishes, one would be to change all my pots with this (or a similar style). Actually, while I’m wishing, I would prefer something like this. I’m trying to figure out all the steps to get cheap access to a kiln this winter. At some point, the next step was always make my own pots. Dream gig: sculpt a wall into a cliff and plant cactus in the cracks.

You should try tile and stone drill bits. They are about $25 per pack of 4 sizes at Home Depot. They have a carbide grinding piece in the tip. They can be used with hammer drills to drill through stone and even granite. I use them to drill through ceramic, glass, brick, concrete and even pebble deck concrete. You need a diamond tipped drill bit to drill through porcelain or it can crack.

I actual bought 2 different drill bits. I bought one for concrete and brick and another meant for ceramic and tile. The shape of the bits allows you to adjust the size of the hole too which is helpful. I’ve drilled ceramic, terracotta earthenware and concrete pots all successfully.
