i have what seems to be aerial roots on my new plant, do they need to be underneath soil or are they alright to just stick out?

They can stick out, you can cut them, or put them in the soil. Totally up to you. If you put them in soil they will grow like regular roots only difference is they also support the stem or stems it’s coming from.

By the leaf in the one photo looks like a philodendron “Birkin”. I could be wrong.
