Hi friends! I would classify myself as an amateur houseplant mama, pretty decent at keeping my plants alive and helping them grow. But I admit I still have a TON to learn. That being said, I will ask probably a very beginner question: should all of my houseplants be in pots with drainage holes? Most of mine are in pots without holes - they have been fine with that & I don’t tend to overwater.. but I really want them to thrive! What would you say the general rule is in your experience? Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated! :)

if you don’t thoroughly saturate the soil every watering there’s a good chance your plants will develop weak roots. especially if they’re in a pot with no drainage. lots of drainage holes (like in nursery pots) is ideal as it allows plenty of airflow so the soil will dry rapidly after a thorough soak— what most plants prefer. i typically have nursery pots in nicer ceramic pots with no holes as a decorative cover

Pots without drainage can be ok, if you are ok with being more diligent and probably spending more time tending. I tend to recommend it only for more experienced or advanced plant parents. Pots with drainage tend to make things simpler overall, especially for beginners.

Always yes to drainage. But don’t get overwhelmed! It’s very easy to drill a hole in most pots with a glass/tile bit. Wait til the spring and make a day of it, drilling holes and repotting your plants. :) I did this in a few phases last year and my plants are so much happier, even the ones I wasn’t having any problems with.
