Question for cat owners Hello! I’m new to plants and have been building my collection for about a month. I have a cat so I’m extremely strict about only having cat safe plants in my house, but my all time favourite plants are pothos and philodendrons and I’d just love to be able to have some! I was wondering if any of you guys have non safe plants, but just keep them out of reach of your cats? I know logically you would probably read this and think ā€œwell obviously that’s fine if they’re out of reachā€ but my only worry is I know some plants are so toxic that even getting the pollen on the cats fur can cause them serious problems, so I’d be worried about handling the plant and then even my cat brushing past my clothes or skin after handling might be dangerous for them! Am I overthinking this and being OTT or am I right to just strictly have only cat safe plants in my house? Sorry if this is a dumb question I have OCD so I tend to overthink and obsess over things that probably don’t matter lol. I would always put my cat baby first so I just want to know what other people do!

I have two cats and have for 14 years. I have all kinds of plants and all over the place. They have bit into the majority of them and are fine. Even toxic ones. My opinion was they must have to ingest a lot. The only plant that made my cat act funny was when we sat with her on the back porch for a bit and she chewed on a mum. (I was not there or would have stopped it.). I just got a Frydek and Croton and the female cat bit both as soon as I got them in the house. I moved them and she hasn’t touched them again. And she was fine. Others may disagree on my style, but again, 14 years and no issues.

As far as I know, two that you’ll really want to stay away from are Easter Lily and dieffenbachia/ā€œdumb cane.ā€ Easter Lilies are incredibly toxic for cats. I don’t know if the pollen contains toxins but they’re notorious for dropping pollen everywhere. Dieffenbachia has neurotoxins in the sap that are harmful for both cats and people. So breaking a leaf or trimming a stem could expose you to it. Honestly idk why the plant is so popular and never has an warnings on the tag. Lots of people have them but I won’t risk it. Maybe I’m over cautious and it’s not that potent, but there’s a lot of plants I like more that don’t contain neurotoxins šŸ˜…

Okay I fact checked myself lol and it’s not a neurotoxin, but it can still kill a furry friend. Apparently philodendron have the same compound, so now I’m a hypocrite because I’m the lord of the philodendrons lol oops šŸ˜¬šŸ˜… My cat personally is not interested in plants. She’s 17, she mostly sleeps. But I wouldn’t rely on just personality of the cat. Younger cats can get very creative when they’re bored. I mean, we do have the saying after all: curiosity killed the cat

I have a few toxic plants. My cat is not very interested in eating them, most plants are dangerous if ingested. Make sure the plant is out of reach, you can try putting coffee grounds on top of the soil, that is supposed to help keep them away from the plants. Depends on how your cat is, there are other products to help keep them away. Call poison control, (888) 426-4435, if you think your cat has eaten any of the plant :)

Do a little research on the types of plants before buying. Some of the plants listed as toxic are like, if your cat eats a whole pound of it they might get an upset tummy. So yes it might be ā€œtoxic,ā€ but it won’t be fatal if kitty gets into it—and if kitty does get into it, chances are they won’t go back for seconds cuz they’ll have learned their lesson.
