Is this from your string of hearts plant? These are tubers that hold water for the roots for times when the soil is dry for long periods.

      These are from caladiums.

Do string of pearls have the same sort of thing? I recently got some string of pearls but they are still small.

Ok then those are the bulbs of your caladium. Plant them and put under grow lights and they should slowly grow new stalks and leaves.

If it is from a String of Hearts I had a similar experience. I was repotting mine and I was shocked when I saw this big white mass in the soil and I thought it was larve of something but when I uncovered it I saw it was part of the plant and I was relieved, anyway, plant them back in the soil and they will sprout and grow again. Plant them about half an inch below the soil.

These are corms. Caladiums grow from these and produce new corms like potatoes. Replant them to grow new plants.

Do they need to get in soil asap?

Caladiums go dormant and emerge in spring. Planting now is probably not a good idea. They can be stored until spring. There are several storage methods that must be followed properly to prevent the bulbs from rotting or mildewing while stored. Check online.

I put them in some dry soil before I saw your comment. I read in my zone I could plant them. They are in a pot in my apartment.

They can over winter in dry soil. They might even put out growth if watered. Not sure. They are perennial bulbs that go dormant each year and revive in spring. I’m in zone 9 and we leave them in ground because of mild winters.
