for beginners i recommend commercial cactus mix and pumice/perlite. the soil should be ideally at least 70-80% drainage material for most cacti and succulents

for my succulents/cacti, I make my own mix. Trust me, this is very easy. I get a bucket with a lid and add 2-parts succulent/cactus mix, 1-part perlite, and 1-part orchid bark. I buy all three from Home Depot and mix them up. As those types of plants don’t need to be repotted as often and others, I mix a very small amount and just make more when I need it.

thank you!!! do you think this mix would be good for a pothos also? or try something different?

No. I use the same ratios for perlite and orchid bark but use regular potting mix (I like the Miracle Gro indoor potting mix; it’s in a gray bag). I use that for every plant (other than cacti or succulents, of course)

Welcome to the rabbit hole of plant care. For my succulents, I use the general Miracle Grow succulent mix. It’s worked well for all my plants that needed a fast draining soil. It may be some time before you need to worry about reporting.
