A trick i learned by a botanist, if it smells REALLY bad then you might have root rot, sadly i don’t know how to fix root rot since i never had them myself, but keep looking!

That’s good to know! It smells like dirt so I suppose that’s a good thing

The roots look pretty normal to me and I agree with the smell thing for detecting root rot.

I actually think the little bit of discoloration is possibly from being in that nursery pot. Sometimes I notice that rusty color on roots that have been in those for a while. I wonder if it’s from not getting a lot of airflow? Sorry if I’m totally wrong on this btw and if someone knows another reason please tell us!

It doesn’t look like root rot to me. When I suspect/know a plant has root rot I give it hydrogen peroxide mixed with water (1:1). I’m not sure if that’s the recommended protocol but it hasn’t harmed any of my plants so far

That’s so interesting, I’ve never heard of that! Good to know, do you trim any or just pour it over the roots?

I’ve never had full blown root rot (at least not that I’ve discovered in time to save) so I haven’t had to, but sometimes my roots are a bit too dark/grey for my comfort. If I’m repotting I soak them in the solution, if I just suspect I have a bit of root rot because I’ve accidentally let a plant sit in water multiple days then I water it with the solution

The roots look pretty normal. I’ve had several bamboo plants and their roots always get the golden orange color. Very normal. You’ll know if it has root rot by smell (like everyone else mentioned) or if the roots are very squishy. Remove any squishy bits and spray the roots with hydrogen peroxide if it has root rot. No need to water it down since it’s not harmful. If you don’t spray with hydrogen peroxide then the bacteria causing the root rot will continue to pester your plant.

Do you have a special spray bottle for hydrogen peroxide?

Amazon or walgreens actually sells hydrogen peroxide bottles with a sprayer on it for pretty cheap!
