About four weeks ago I repotted this Aztec Marigold for a friend and I have temporary custody while she’s away for the summer. It seemed very happy when I first repotted it and has been doing well until the last few days. Now the top leaves are shriveling and it’s not standing upright as it was before. I was sure something was wrong, but now with closer inspection, I see it also has new growth. I’ve never had an Aztec Marigold before, so I’ve just been doing what Planta tells me to do for it. Is this normal? Should I prune it? Any help will be very appreciated! Thanks!

Looks like overwatering when the leaves and plant go limp. The leaves typically turn yellow and brown with under watering. You can cut the dead parts. You will need to let the soil dry out. Water only when the soil dries out 1” to 2” deep. Check for root rot. I think that is a Mexican Mint marigold, a.k.a. Mexican Tarragon (Tagetes lucida). They sell for $10 in a gallon pot in Walmart, Lowes and other stores. I buy one each spring. It’s a hardy shrub used in cooking. The soil drains easily. So, I don’t bother repotting. I’m suggesting you buy your friend a larger one locally or online which has a better chance of living. It be leggy this late in the season. Just trim it and cook with the trimmings!👨‍🍳

Thanks! I was afraid it was overwatering. I’ve been keeping to the schedule, but the soil doesn’t seem to drain well at all. Or more probably, I can blame these damn plastic pots my friend uses instead of terracotta!
