Finding new ways to combat pests is crucial for plant enthusiasts like us. Recently, I faced a significant thrips outbreak among my beloved houseplants and wanted to share my experience in dealing with it. First, when facing a severe infestation, it's vital to assess the situation. I inspected all of my plants and decided which ones were salvageable. Unfortunately, some had to be discarded to have less plants to treat. For the surviving plants, especially those heavily damaged or oversized, I pruned them back and took cuttings to give them a fresh start and make them more manageable. Then, I tackled the thrips by thoroughly removing the soil and rinsing the roots under running water to eliminate any remaining pests and their pupae in the soil. Next, I prepared a bath for my plants, mixing water with neem oil, rubbing alcohol, and soap. Neem oil acts as a natural pesticide, rubbing alcohol kills pests on contact, and the soap breaks down their protective coatings. I soaked the plants in this solution for a few hours to ensure thorough treatment. Afterward, I showered the plants, repotted them into fresh soil and clean pots to prevent reinfestation. I also cleaned the surrounding areas in my house where I kept my plants to remove any lingering pests. To safeguard my plants from future thrips invasions, I introduced predatory mites, natural thrips predators. Regularly releasing these beneficial insects once a month has maintained a pest-free environment for my plants. I also shower my plants from time to time to clean their leaves and to remove any potential pests. While my plants thrived without any thrips in sight for months, towards the end of this summer, a few managed to sneak in, likely due to my open balcony door next to my largest plant collection and pausing the predatory mites. This serves as a reminder that vigilance and regular maintenance are essential in the ongoing battle against pests on your house plants. In conclusion, drowning pests can be an effective method for severe infestations, but it's crucial to follow up with proper care and preventive measures to maintain healthy, pest-free plants. Happy planting! 🌿🪴
