Overgrown rose bush I believe. How can I trim it so it can bloom? Do I need to make it a lot smaller?

you can prune it if you’d like it in a certain shape but i’m pretty sure roses will bloom regardless of their shape. it may need some fertilizer (bone meal is great for blooms) or it may just be the wrong time of year, some varieties only bloom a few weeks in spring or summer.

The type of rose will dictate the pruning method. It can be tricky. Grandifloras, floribundas and tea roses only bloom from new branches. So, pruning is essential to getting blooms. Most (not all roses) are prune at the beginning of spring after the last frost. Flowers that bloom on old growth wood requires pruning only to clean up the plant and control the shape. Additionally, you can’t freely cut like hedge trimming. You have to cut at a 45 degree angle at a certain distance from a bud facing out, plus other pruning requirements. I highly recommend watching a video on pruning roses or hiring a pro for such a big job. I have butchered a few expensive rose bushes. 😁 It will need the right fertilizer and soil amendments after it is properly pruned. Their are specific fertilizer for roses since they need acidic fertilizer. They need compost worked into the soil around the base. Mulch is added, typically acidic pine bark mulch, to block weeds. It’s not easy, but, it’s rewarding when the rose bush is happy. 🌹💐
