Hi everyone. My Banana plant was growing beautifully now the leaves are turning brown and dying. What should I due. I live in Philadelphia so I know I will have to cut it down for the winter. But why is turning brown now. I had a little seeding and all of a sudden it drooped and died.

Also, it was very hot a week or two ago, and that may have burned your leaves a little

My plants are getting a lot of direct sun, even on the porch, when the sun rises or sets. I don’t know if I am under or overwatering. I follow the watering schedule given by the app. But I will look into a water globe. I saw on Instagram someone was using wine bottles. (I have plenty of those) šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚. Thank you all for your help. My ā€œBrown Thumbā€ is getting greener. šŸ¤—

While the app gives us a set schedule for watering, you should really check the soil to make sure it actually needs water. You can get a moisture meter from Amazon or store of your choice at an affordable price. Or you could just stick a wooden chopstick. If it comes out wet with soil stuck to it (like yr baking a cake) then skip the water.

I’ve had to skip watering on certain plants for weeks at a time even though Planta says it’s time.

Check your roots for signs of overwatering (rotting, soggy, smelly) before adding self watering equipment. The app has known issues of suggesting excess watering times. Testing the soil for dryness is best.

I appreciate the information about banana plants. I have one that was given to me this summer, which I’ve been keeping outside in full sun, and gets rain water. He can’t seem to keep more than two healthy leaves at a time. But! He recently put out a babya. I’ve been assuming I’ll need to bring him inside when it gets cold (I live in zone 6b). What is this about cutting him down for winter? Any recommendations are welcome!

My neighbors cut their banana plants down to about six inches. Or bring them in the house and put them in the basement and let them hibernate for the winter. They do not water them but bring them back out when the temperature goes up for the spring/summer. But I’m a plant mom now. I have to make sure what I am doing.

Oh ok thank you! I might go with the hibernation option…
