I’m new to the app and I’m not the most successful plant owner. However, I find that the app requests ‘fertilizing’ more often than suggested at the plant store where I bought the plant. I was told not to fertilize in the summer or fall. Anyway, should I just follow instructions and not question? (BTW, a couple leaves turned yellow and fell of my fig plant a week after fertilizing it).

Being told not to fertilize in summer or fall is not correct on their part. Fertilizer is most important in summer because the plant is growing the most. I water with a 1/4 dilution of fertilizer every time I water, occasionally skipping it. I would only actively avoid fertilizing when a plant is dormant

I find the fertilizing suggestions to be pretty reliable. My caveat though is that it depends on the kind of fertilizer. Synthetic fertilizers can “burn” the plant’s roots if used too much. I would err on the side of fertilizing less with synthetic. Organic is usually pretty reliable. Organic as in plant and animal derived, it doesn’t necessarily need to be the kind that’s certified for organic produce

Definitely weird to say not to fertilize during the growing season.. fall makes sense however
