Am needing some wisdom please..starter plants.. the little babies you can buy on Etsy.. some are actually pretty good sized.. some tiny.. so my question.. if the tinier ones are put in a pot that’s too big, will it slow down their growth?? Or worse? Most of my tiniest are in 5in terra cotta pots.. most doing well but there’s a few lagging behind.. wondering if I should put in smaller pot or that will do more harm than good?

Depends on the plant. Some like to be snug in their pots.

My biggest failure is a tortum philodendron.. this is my second attempt 😕.. another concern is a peperomia..

That type of philodendron in my experience loves orchid bark and coconut set up with some moisture control soil. They like moist but not too wet and cannot be dry. If they dry out they throw a tantrum. I rehab them and give them back. I cant handle the neediness the peperomia I have is a mystery. She thrives on neglect. I got her and didn't repot her. She is in a clay pot and that seems to be the trick. She looks unhealthy to me but then I see new growth so I ignore her. She hates direct light, but needs a bright spot. 🤷🏾‍♀️ It has been a mission to get her to settle down and be happy!

I would keep them in a smaller pot. If you have them in too big of a pot for their roots, there’s a high risk for root rot.

You can get inch terracotta pots with drainage really cheap. My local garden center sells them for 79 cents and they work great for this! Or amazon, obviously lol. I wouldn’t put them in bigger than they need, it becomes a water issue…soil just stays wet because not a big enough root system drinking from it

very informative comments here! i was curious when i read this post as i've been starting my rooted succulent cuttings in groups in biggish pots. so might it be better to let them grow in little tiny pots?? i didn't know planting them in too large of a pot would give them root rot!
