I used to bottom water all of my plants. I think that sometimes your plant gets watered more thoroughly if you bottom water because sometimes spots along the sides are missed with top watering due to soil density (or being hydrophobic). Whereas with bottom watering, roots soak up water from the bottom up. If you choose to bottom water consistently, just make sure you top water occasionally to wash out mineral build up. Another thing about bottom watering is that I think it keeps soil moist longer, which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your soil mixture, plant, conditions, etc. It can be dangerous for your plants if they stay too wet for too long because it deprives the roots of oxygen.

i try not to bottom water unless absolutely necessary, most plants (especially epiphytes) hate having their roots sitting in water

I agree with Anya. Also, there is a less likely chance of fungus gnats emerging with bottom watering.

I top water everything except for my carnivorous plants, and it works well.

I bottom water in the winter to fight gnats and top water when it’s warm to flush and make sure watering is thorough. I also watch my plants pretty closely when I bottom water to make sure they don’t take up too much. I changed my soil mix this season, though, so I don’t know if they will hold as much moisture from bottom watering…
