Hey everyone! I know it’s probably bedtime for most of you but if you can take a quick moment and help me with my spider plant that would be great! The leaves are yellowing on both the spider plants in the pot and they’re both in direct, bright sunlight, I’ve been watering regularly. Could somebody help? The soil does hold water so it could be root rot?

Does the pot have drainage? Have you repotted it recently? Do you check the soil moisture before watering? Or just do it whenever the app tells you? I HIGHLY recommend using the app as a reminder, check the soil, and if it’s still wet then snooze the task, don’t just water when it tells you to. Do you fertilize regularly? It could definitely possibly be root rot, the pot does look a little large for them. Usually you want something 1-2” larger than the root ball. It could be too warm where you have it, sunburn usually shows up as spots though vs entire leaves yellowing. Wait a day or two after watering (or if the soil is still wet then you can do it now) and gently slide the whole thing out till you can see the roots. Brown/mushy = root rot. Remove all soil, cut away any rotten roots and repot in totally new soil in a smaller pot.

I haven’t fertilized them at all yet, yes it does have drainage. I don’t check the soil moisture actually. I gonna start doing that! I did repot recently and the roots have reached the bottom of the pot now! I think I’m gonna skip watering this time to give time for the soil to dry out.

My favorite tool is a wooden chop stick. I use it every time before watering. Stick it all the way to the bottom and dirt will stick to it at the level of moisture. Great way to see how dry your soil is. Add some fertilizer when you feel its ready :)

A cheap water gauge will take the guess work out of watering. Check before and while you water and stop when it gets to just moist enough.
