Hi y’all! I have a vanilla planifolia and wanted to know if anyone else has experience with them. Right now I have her in some orchid bark and she’s doing well but she’s going to need a new home soon so I wanted to get her into a more permanent home. I was kind of wanting to plant her with a mate she can climb but not sure if I should. I do move her around too sometimes inside sometimes outside depending on how hot it is and she does fine with the transitions.

She seems very interested in that shelf. Fascinating to see her growing in a pot!

She’s starting to grow a lot of the clingy roots so I keep moving her so she doesn’t cling. I don’t want her clinging to that shelf lol I just mist her ALOT to keep the aerial roots healthy

I don’t have a lot of experience so you may want to verify with you own research, but… They like a denser soil than what you’d typically think of, more along the lines of a paph or epidendrum. I am growing mine in an aroid mix - 1/3 orchid bark 1/3 perlite 1/3 potting soil. I have it trained on a circular trellis so I can encourage rooting each time the vine completes a revolution. But from what I’ve read, the roots in the media become less important as the plant gets bigger. Humidity starts to play a bigger roll so growing indoors becomes challenging. They seem to be better suited for the greenhouse. You’ll have to be patient for blooms too because the plant has to become quite large before it flowers. Once it does flower, you will need to pollinate by hand. I have my bee costume and makeup brush ready to go for when the big day finally arrives! But like I said, I don’t have a lot of experience with them so take everything I’ve typed with a grain of salt.

I’ll take it with a grain of salt except the bee costume. Love it! 🐝 I actually just saw so many bees flying around my cucumbers flowers yesterday I was so in love 😻

I just bought my own cutie patootie on this one so I’ve been reading up on it! Have you considered a long piece of cholla wood so that it can climb up it and anchor naturally? Eventually the density of it wrapped around the wood should help retain humidity in the center while also promotion aeration! Also sharing my cutie if you’re interested 😁
