🌱 Help! My plant's roots are coming through the bottom of the planter! What should I do? Hey plant lovers! I'm in need of some advice or solutions for a plant predicament I'm facing. My plant's roots have started to grow through the drainage holes at the bottom of the planter, and I'm not quite sure how to handle this situation. 🌿 Has anyone else experienced this before? I'm worried that the roots growing out of the bottom might be hindering the plant's growth or causing other issues. What steps should I take to address this problem and ensure my plant stays healthy and happy? Here are a few questions I have: 1️⃣ Should I repot the plant into a larger pot to give the roots more space to grow? Or is there another solution? I like the plants current size. 2️⃣ Would it be beneficial to trim or prune the roots that are coming out of the drainage holes, or is that too risky? 3️⃣ What signs should I look out for to determine if the roots are causing any harm to the plant? 4️⃣ Are there any preventative measures or tips I can follow to prevent this from happening again in the future? I would greatly appreciate any advice, tips, or personal experiences you can share regarding this issue. I want to make sure I provide the best care for my plant and keep it thriving! Thank you in advance for your help! 🌿💚

    1. Yes repot, but ONLY 2inch bigger pot. 2. Do NOT cut the roots. There is NOTHING wrong with them. This is nature…they have no where else to grow (they aren’t in ground), so they are seeking more real estate. Again, DO NOT cut them. 3. Harm? Please see 2. 4. Preventive measures?! You’re plant is happy, this is a GREAT sign. They were in a crib, not graduate them up to a toddler bed.

Over the weekend I will inspect the roots and potentially place in a larger pot. ❤️

If your plant is in a self watering pot, I commented on your other post on what to do!

I do not use the self watering pot as it was intended to be. I use it to allow the plant to drain and I constantly empty the bottom so there is not reservoirs for my plants to pull from. The dark brown is a jute string I use to help me determine if the bottom soil is wet/dry. Over the weekend I will inspect the roots and potentially place in a larger pot.

i’m not sure why you wouldn’t want it to grow more, but if you didn’t then you could pull the plant out of the pot and chop the bottom half inch of roots off of the soil (like slicing a sausage). this has a chance of killing the plant though. your best bet is to up pot slightly

repot into bigger pot and don’t use those self water pots they will cause root rot as soil can’t dry out between watering

Self watering pots do not cause the soil to be wet. If soil is always wet because of a self watering pot, it’s because your over-filling the reservoir

it depends on how it’s used and if it’s a good pot
