I am a newb when it comes to plants, I got a alocasia question. I am getting a second new leaf unfurling on my pink dragon alocasia and I noticed one of the older leaves appears to be dying off. Is that something that is to be expected?

I’m new to alocasias specifically but to my knowledge that can happen due to the leaf being old or overwatering or even under watering. I have a few alocasias now in my collection and still learning but as for the rest of the plants I’ve dealt with it is probably focusing it’s nutrients on the new growing leaf and going away with the old leaf. Also depends on the environment you have it in alocasia like high humidity

Yeah I don’t believe it is a humidity or or water issue, but I am not gonna rule it out either. I am gonna keep an eye on the rest of the leaves and see what happens. I do keep the humidity high by running a humidifier. I also have it under lights

Looks like it’s in a wonderful home. Might just be an old leaf ready to go to bring in the new ones.

100% normal behavior. Alocasias drop old leaves as they grow. You only need to be concerned if the rate of drop exceeds the rate of new growth.

They do reproduce via rhizomes- a sort of underground almost tuber-like runner. What you have in that pic is almost certainly a rhizome.

They’re often called corms. I’d look up YouTube videos on how to propagate them! I just did around 40 this spring!

yes! they’re called corms and they will sometimes sprout up on the soil; when reporting your alocasia be careful because there will probably be many corms in the soil that you can grow like seeds! sometimes they won’t sprout while attached to the parent plant, but will once you put them in soil or perlite (my personal favorite for alocasias)
