Okay people, I went all out and purchased 4 Prayer plants, including 2 Calatheas. I also purchased a Jewel orchid. These are all new genera to me. I wanted to challenge myself and try something new. Anyone who has experience with any of these genus, please give me all the tips 🙌🏼 I know I can Google and watch videos on this but nothing beats personalized advice in my opinion. Plus it is always good to read different people’s opinions cause everyone’s experience can vary 🤗 TIA 🙏🏻 (Pictures are not mine, just for attention. Mine are in the mail 📦)

I have a jewel orchid. It hasn’t grown or changed since I got it 2 months ago. It doesn’t look unhealthy, just doesn’t do anything. Maybe it’s just rooting down?

I have 2 varieties of jewel orchids (lightning as pictured and one that is almost black). I put them in an enclosed glass vase with mostly sphagnum moss and some soil underneath. I got an acrylic flat lid made from an etsy seller with a few air holes in it so humidity stays higher than ambient air but not so high as a terrarium. Moisture stays for a long time in there so super easy care. I’ve only had them for maybe 3-4 months, but so far so good! They seem to be happy and have all grown new leaves. What I learned about them (from the orchid specialist at plant store i bought them from as well as you tubers) is that they are truly a low light loving plant (unlike the usual false claim of a plant being low light). Like put them in a dim (not totally dark) corner where nothing else usually thrives, and it will be super happy. They are under-under-story plants in the wild and are used to being heavily shaded. Too much light can actually cause leaf scald. Mine is kinda tucked under some larger leafed plants. As for the Calathea Warzewiczii (pictured), this is my favorite calathea of all of them (I have had at least 10 varieties)! Its leaves are so velvety soft and beautiful to touch (i cannot resist that one!). The struggle with Calatheas is real. I have had that particular one for about a year now. It def had some issues and leaf loss through the winter (but i was keeping it outside for some of that time so was cold stressed a lot) but now that its on the other side of repotting /resoling (since the dense coco coir soil it came with is not good for them long term) and living inside with a grow light, it has been producing all kinds of new leaves and even working hard at producing a flower (can’t bring myself to cut it which i should). I guess what i’m saying is you will have to face each individual issue as it arrises which is part of the Calathea journey, and don’t be surprised at all if half or even all of your plant completely dies back to almost dormant state, but then re-sprouts new leaves as if a brand new plant, once conditions are right for it. Don’t give up! And don’t question the distilled water thing. Just do it from the start. Seriously.

The tiny leaves on your jewel orchid are so cute!

Sorry for all the questions but I am curious as to what grow lights you use? 👀 I have some cool cheap ones from Amazon and I wonder if those are good enough for Calatheas haha

I know you’re probably asking Danika but I also have Barrina grow lights and they are “powerful” enough to support calatheas :) (calatheas require the same amount of light as most alocasias)

There’s an in-depth lighting guide for each species on houseplantjournal’s website.

Yup. All true. I love that website. There is surviving light and then there is thriving light. The more indirect light you can give them the better. “Medium” light would probably be in the adequate category. I personally use some cheap LED amazon ring lights for some of mine currently, and they are growing and doing ok, but i’m looking into switching it up with something a bit more for them for them to do even better. But then again, cave. 😜 All depends what the rest of your ambient light conditions are.

I love Calatheas because they are so beautiful, but they can be really temperamental 😭 i didn’t know about the distilled water thing until i had mine for about a month and the leaves got brown spots all over. I transported her home from college and the change in environments put her in so much shock i haven’t seen new growth in months☹️ i think any slight change in environment could cause them to freak out lol. they are so worth the extra work though! best of luck to you!
