Hello everyone! I’m new to owning plants and I’ve noticed a lot of people have rocks with their plant, is there any reason for that or is it just for the aesthetic? šŸ˜…

Rocks and other things like bark or perlite can help keep the soil from compacting and provide better drainage to prevent overwatering :)

I use them for extra drainage. Sometimes if a have a weird shaped pot that has areas that could fill with water/not drain well, I'll put some rocks in those spaces before I add soil just to make sure i don't get little swimming pools. I also will take a few rocks to weigh down a stem that might have grown an aerial root and is already grabbing the soil. Just to help it stay down. I also like the look and sometimes top dress the pot just because!

I’m addition to drainage and aesthetics, a layer of pebbles in top of the soil will help deter gnats. The gnats can’t get into the soil with the pebbles there and if they are already in the soil they can’t get back out. I use them for that and it seems to work well.
