Is there anything I should look for or avoid when buying support stakes? I see a lot of moss covered but also bamboo… does material matter or am I overthinking it? 😂

I would say something that is wood would be risky. Moisture in soil can rot wood. It depends if you just want a trellis (just a support) or a moss pole (where roots can grow into it)!

It depends on your goal. If you are wanting to get more mature growth and provide more nutrients for your plant, a moss pole is the way to go. If you just want to provide some support, which also allows for more mature growth but not as much as a moss pole would, go with a bamboo stake. If you don’t mind me asking, which plant are you looking to stake? That could also help make a more appropriate suggestion.

My monstera, eventually. She’s growing quite well so I want to be prepared. I also have an elephant ear that leans at times, and I’ve read they both do and don’t need support so we will see I guess? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Both plants are outside as well.

Both of those only need a support stake. I definitely would not recommend a moss pole for these as there is truly no need and they do require some work (have to keep it moist, extend, etc). None of these will grow roots that would benefit from a moss pole. The Monstera does grow aerial roots but they would grow right through the moss pole so it would be pointless. Hope that helps 🤗
