I have a a golden Pothos that I recently brought into my work office. It’s doing beautifully, but I’ve noticed an abundance of fungus gnats are now flying around my office 😖 I bought sticky traps to place in the plant itself, but it’s not solving the bulk of the issue. Any suggestions? Last resort is to move the plant to the graveyard, which I’d hate to do.

    Sprinkle cinnamon on the soil!

Definitely try this! Cinnamon is an antifungal. Fungus gnat larvae feed on the fungus in your soil. By using cinnamon, it should starve the fungus gnat larvae.

Also, make sure you aren’t watering too often. Fungus gnats like moist soil and pothos can completely dry out before watering again :)

Anya has some good tips! I also bottom water all my plants 4/5 waterings. It keeps the top layer of soil a tad bit dryer to prevent them from laying as many eggs

What a great idea ( and a nice room freshener, too)! Thanks :-)

I have a Katchy for catching fungus gnats. It’s a machine with a blue light and fan. You leave it running overnight and bugs fly into the light and get blown onto a sticky trap. I just use the cheap yellow sticky traps on the bottom, not the branded ones. I just have one and move it around my house whenever I notice a gnat. Make sure the pothos is all the way dry before watering, and that no one “helps” you water it either. When you do water it, put it on a tray and bottom water it, not water it through the top. Remove any water left in the tray. Fungus gnats live near the surface so bottom watering will dry out the eggs and they will die off pretty quickly. Although maybe not as fast as coworkers will have enough patience for.

I have been letting the soul dry out. I’ve looked at the Zevo plug-in which has gotten good reviews. They are definitely persistent buggers!

If all fails. Repot your pothos. Throw away all the dirt. Use everything new only. Cut all the leaves w/any gnats. You only need 1 good looking stem for pothos, place stem in water first before repotting with dirt. Pothos grow well in just water
