Hiya! I’m still new to finding the best way to care for specific plants, I believe this is a Stag-horn fern of some kind. Are the brown leaves at the bottom (covering the soil) meant to be like that? It came in a nursery pot like this, but I see so many on a hanging frame, sideways. Anyone know what’s best??

I'd also Google "best ways to mount a staghorn fern." I know they're epiphytic and don't do all that well in soil unless this is a non-epiphytic variety. I usually see them mounted on something.

Yes the brown shield part is normal. Do not attempt to remove it, or the plant will die.

There are some tabs in the ‘learn more’ section on the info page for your plant

The shield will regrow new platelets over and over, they grow in green then turn brown as they age. The new one will cover the old one. Mounting is what it likes, so eventually do this for longevity. Tons of you tube tutorials on how to do this. I have a giant one i took off a friends huge tree and did it.
