can anyone tell me more about using leca instead of potting soil? i keep having gnat infestations and i’m looking for a soil that avoids this. somequestions i have: i hear that if i use leca i need to have a pot without draining holes, is this true? does it really keep pests away? is it really reusable? if anyone has advice or information about this i would appreciate it! thanks!

I know the soil you need! You need ā€œMiracle Gro Potting Mixā€ I’ve been using it for all my gardening, and they have been really healthy!

Yes you would need a pot without holes because you put in the leca and then fill it with water. It is reusable as well. I can’t answer your question about it keeping gnats away. Good luck!

So I actually use a mix of both soil and leca for my plants. With this, you want to still have drainage. You can either put the leca on the bottom and soil on top, or mix them together. I find that mixing it works best for my plants to make sure the soil still holds water without causing root rot. There are lots of different ways to use them depending on your watering frequency. It’s a great solution to the pests though!

You can actually use Leca or Pon in a pot with drainage holes. You would just need to then put that pot in a cache pot without holes to hold the water. This method works best for transitioning plants from soil until they get used to new substrate. A closed vessel method (such as a glass vase) is ideal for once your plant is used to the substrate or if transitioning from water propagation or from anything grown from babies in things like perlite or moss. Yes its true, zero fungus gnats. Its a non-organic substrate so there is no way for them to breed. If you have other plants in your house that are still in organic soils then you will still have a problem, just not with your Leca/Pon plants. It won’t prevent other pests. Just gnats. Leca is best for larger or older plants with larger bigger roots. Letchuza Pon is best for young plants or plants with finer roots. Yes its 100% reusable after sterilization between uses. I highly recommend you type in ā€œLeca vs Ponā€ into you-tube and watch some videos to further understand… there is so much info there that i can’t spell out here! Good luck!
