hey all! i have this ~7 year old lucky bamboo that has been in rocks for a while without a drainage hole and it was looking a bit sad - and then i moved it into a terracotta pot with rocks and it started looking worse - and transferred it into a cup of distilled water in partial sun - can anyone tell me whats going on with the stem? i know the plant is very old for a bamboo but its the last remaining part of my grandma that we have (also to the right in the first picture is a smaller cutoff that i propagated and is thriving in the water)

It looks like you’re dealing with some rot that’s moving up the cane. It’s most likely due to over-saturation (it needs oxygen).

I would recommend cutting off the base slightly above the node below the little brown leaf on the stem. You should then be able to propagate it in water, but I might opt for just sticking it in some soil and keeping it well watered (not over watered). I’m not an expert with bamboo btw. Just going off my intuition and experience of being a plant owner. Good luck!

This is what I did on mine. You can save the stem with the leaves and ditch the rotting one or transplant it in soil. I think it's drowning and it needs nutrients, not distilled water. I think it's best to cut and save the remainder of it. If you do, you soak it in water until roots form. For me, it took a while since I just used regular water (without chlorine). But please do more reading. Good luck!
