Very very new plant mom here. Does anyone know if these roots mean that I need to repot this philodendron brazil?!? Thanks for the help!

I’d recommend watching a quick YouTube video on root pruning/repotting root bound (or pot bound) house plant.

be gentle if you are splitting, repotting, and cutting roots all at once. I just had the most luscious pothos to split into 3 and I put it through too much trauma as I used the faucet sprayer on full blast and got every single spec of dirt out and the roots untangled, and then cut 2 inches off the roots and repotted. I just split and repotted my Brazil philo and it went much better. I would suggest untangling and splitting yours but maybe not cutting the roots the same day as it’s a lot of trauma at once, or be sparing when cutting the roots. Also let the roots dry in paper towels if you get them extremely wet while untangling. Lastly, don’t use fertilizer until it’s back to the normal state. You just don’t want too much trauma at once.

Thank you! It appears to have multiple little plants in there but what scares me is all the aerial roots going back in the soil 😬. I have never done something like this so hoping I don’t kill the entire plant 😔😢.

I wouldn’t trim off more than 25 percent of the roots. And I recommend leaving some of the original soil around the root ball if possible. It helps the plant recover from the shock of trimming, splitting and repotting faster. Also, hold off on any fertilizer for a few weeks after repotting.

Thanks for the tips about the soil around the root ball. I’m going to try and trim the least that I can too. I honestly have no idea what I’m doing…performing surgery on a plant?!? 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️😢

You only need to trim them if you’re trying to squeeze the plant into the same size pot with fresh soil. Especially for this plant… what I would do is move it to the next pot size larger, add fresh soil around this root ball, and not disturb it beyond teasing the tips of the very bottom roots downward. Even that would be mostly not necessary though. Theyll figure it out. It just wants a bigger pot, or trim if you’re really attached to it going back into the same pot

Also! This is a really great sign of how happy it’s been in your care 🙂
