Help with succulents and “string of”!!!!!! First, my succulents are always getting etiolated even when under grow lights all day!!!! I got an old lady cactus and it looks like a weird cone now. And I’m always so scared to water them!!! I don’t have “good draining” soil no matter how hard I try And I cannot keep “string of” things happy no matter what I do. They’re always drying out or rotting away. I had a string of hearts that was beautiful and when I saw it had a low of water stuck in the soil because it was root bound, I repotted it and now it’s down to a few straggly pieces that are wrinkled but I’m scared to water them because I don’t want them to die!!! Help!!!!

All "good draining" soil means is it's chunky, coarse and sandy so enough air and oxygen can pass through. To make it simple, get a cactus and succulent potting soil mix. I've been getting Back to the Roots Cactus and Succulent potting mix from Target and mixing it with a little sand from Amazon and my succulents love it. I don't always use the sand. Simply using a good cactus and succulent potting mix soil is enough. And don't pack it too tightly around the plant. Just enough to secure the plant, but also enough to let air pass through the soil. All of my string of things are props right now. But they're propagating in just the straight cactus and succulent mix by Back to the Roots and I keep it moist til they grow roots. They've been like that for a couple weeks and they're doing great! String of things, once established, can be tricky. Bananas and Turtles are easier than Pearls. But all of them are essentially succulents and thrive on neglect. Follow the Planta watering schedule, but stick your finger in the soil to make sure it's completely dry first. If not, snooze the action til next time. Also, it really really helps to adjust all the settings about each of your plants in Planta. Plant and pot size matters a lot in terms of watering schedule. I've killed a couple plants in the past by not filling in all the correct info. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask me any questions :)

I also use cactus and succulent mix, I add a little extra perlite if I’m not using terracotta pots. I water on plantas schedule most of the time, sometimes I go a few days longer because I don’t have time that day. I’m using white and red grow lights and mine are thriving. My succulents just get by on them until summer then I cut them and stick them back outside and they thrive.

What about a jade plant? I have a ripple jade and it has a good stem, but recently the roots all crisped up and I can’t get any water to it!!

Yes! Also recommend potting cactus, succulents, and strings in terracotta. Also, always need a drainage hole no matter the pot material

I’ve discovered that, with grow lights and succulents/cacti, they need to be super close to the light. I’ve got a “String of Buttons” or Crassula perforata, they grow like crazy but the spacing between the “buttons” only shortens when I place them about 4 inches from the light source.
