I always put some small rocks at the bottom of my plant pots even if they have drainage. Just a habit I’ve got, I’m not sure if it’s helpful or not but I haven’t noticed any bad effects.

rocks at the bottom of your pots actually impedes drainage, the difference in materials and the surface tension of the water makes it difficult for water to flow between the two. i would recommend reading up on perched water tables in potted plants for more information

I’ve done it, but it’s still possible to overwater accidentally. It works best in a clear container so you can see if there’s still water at the bottom when you go to water

i would suggest looking into perched water tables in potted plants, this will explain why ā€œrocks for drainageā€ is bad for your plants. it’s a bit complicated for me to explain, but there are lots of helpful articles online about this phenomenon
