Okay this is a fairly general question from an indoor plant neophyte. When your plants have grown to immense size is it time to think about combining some into larger pots? Or is it simply a matter of repotting into yet larger individual pots?

I have combined things that have the same care. 2 or 3 philodendrons in same pot, 2 or 3 pothos in the same pot. Some people put small filler plants below a taller plant. But they still should have the same light and watering needs. Or individual large plants in large pots. Do it how you’ll like it

I literally just did this to my fiddle leaf fig yesterday… cut it into 4 parts to propagate and left the mother plant bottom to regrow. Just put it in google, the AI will walk you right through it, it’s how did it! 🙂

Either way. Whatever you want is fine but if you want to put a few plants together make sure they have the same care like JR has said..

Quite a few plants can handle a chopping off of the bottom third of the rootball. Then you are able to put it back into the same pot with fresh soil. This also stimulates new growth.

Thank you. A third from the rootball. At the bottom. Do you mean I would cut off… yeah I’m confused and scared.

I'm guessing she is meaning to prune the roots. This is done for bonsai. You remove extra roots and refill with fresh soil. The roots will bounce right back.

A horizontal cut with a sharp knife. I’ve only done this once the plant is rootbound. When it gets to that point the plant will retain the pot shape when you pop it out of the pot. Lay it on its side. Slice off the bottom 1/3. Fiddle’s can handle this as long as they are healthy. I should say, I wouldn’t do this to a plant that was having any stress issues though.

For a fiddle leaf fig, I'd upsize the pot and/or prune the roots (bonsai instructions are great for that), and I'd prune the top. Figs are trees, and will get full tree size if you let them. Keeping them indoors is like keeping a large bonsai, just without the bonsai style training. For top pruning, you want the size to be in balance with the root mass. To avoid stressing it, don't remove more than about 1/3rd of the root or branch mass at any one time. (Figs are very tolerant of trims so you can get away with more than that. They also allow coppicing and do cuttings easily. They can be pruned at any time of the year.)
