I took this plant from work. It’s a philodendron Xanadu. It’s doing really good, but I noticed some of these older leaves. Have this orange speckled stuff. I don’t know if it was a pest at one point. I think it’s also in too big of a pot. There’s a lot of new growth. Any suggestions? Or is it doing just fine maybe cut off the older leaves, I am thinking about downsizing it. I don’t know. Let me know please on that.

    Rust? I’m thinking so.

That’s interesting. I’ve never heard that before, but I can see where that can be. Have you ever treated something like this before?

I use copper spray. I think there are a few options, but I hate the smell of Neem and that’s one I know. The copper seems to work ok for me, I just use it every day for about 5 days now. I’m dealing with the same issue. ☹️🥀

So I don’t have Copper spray. But I do have neem oil and I don’t mind the smell. So how do you use that? Do you just spray it on the leaves like you would with a copper spray? Because I have used neem oil to get rid of some pest. But I don’t think it’s a pest problem. I think it’s a plant problem in the ways of the soil or something.

I think rust is a bacteria or fungus. Look it up online, it will let you know. I guess I should look it up too, because I’m not entirely sure.

Wow! Yeah, I personally have never had this problem with any of my plants, but I guess it is a real thing. Thank you so much for doing the legwork on that and giving me the information. I think I’m going to take it out of its pot. See what the roots look like, cut off the old leaves. It’s still in good shape so I don’t think I’m gonna lose it but I think it does need some help. Thank you so much.

It doesn’t look like rust. Rust is a fungus. There will be some powdery rust colored substance on the leaves with fungus rust. Several other conditions can cause the yellow spots including inconsistent watering, edema and overwatering. Edema is excess water in the cells that burst leaving spots. Inconsistent watering or overwatering can cause yellowing. I would guess is more of an old watering issue because it’s only on the older leaves. I wouldn’t worry as long as it’s not spreading to other leaves or getting worse on the affected leaves.

Thanks. Yes that makes sense. I did repot it. It was such a cakey mess in the root ball. I did cut off the older leaves (and broke some while working on it). Eeek. But I hope it will get better.
