Any place is cheap if you time your shopping well. Figure out when your local stores swap out one season's stock for the next; that's when they'll have the best sales to clear out space for the new ones. You can attend plant society meetings (they don't sell every time, but they do get vendors fairly often) and plant shows. You can also check things like facebook marketplace for people downsizing their collections. Online, you can get cuttings, tissue cultures, or younger plants to save money (though they are sometimes harder to keep alive than average sized plants.) The best prices I've seen so far are the kroger clearance section, and plant society sales

Also with common types of plants with rare variegations, always wait for the price to come down. They get propagated via tissue culture, so the odds are very high that they'll go from unicorn plant prices to $25 at walmart in 1-5 years

The Green Escape all day long for babies and starter plants. 🥰🥰 about 65% of my plants came from them. Always very healthy.

Trader Joe’s usually has larger plants for $12.99. Just bought this one last week. I also got a bird of paradise a few months ago same price.

Lowe's will often put plants on clearance up to 50% off. I got this silver sword philodendron for only $4!
