So last May I bought a 1” pot with a China doll seedling. There were 6 teeny plants and only one has survived. It is growing well but since this is the first time I have had one I’m not sure if everything is alright. My grandfather had a rather large one that was really full so that is what I am used to seeing but it was a mature tree. This one keeps sending out new branches from the main stem on the top but every time they get super leggy. Just recently it has started pushing growth from the main branch at the bottom of the plant and “filling it” but it just seems a very odd way to grow. I have it on a table under a grow light in my kitchen it gets a small amount of filtered sunlight from a window with a covered porch outside but the light is on about 18 hours a day. Does anyone have experience with these plants? It gets regular watering and fertilizer and misting. Am I doing something wrong or is this how they normally grow?

Judging how long the internodes have grown, he wants more light than what’s offered. Proper lighting will keep growth more compact.

So have one that was super small, I am talking like 1 inch total. This thing is full now, I keep it cut back and remove the leggy portions. When I keep him by a grow light it is a lot less leggy.

That’s the way this one started.

It’s been under a grow light but I’m wondering if it just isn’t strong enough. I’ve relocated it under a new light so we’ll see how it goes.

I put one of my ‘duller’ lights basically right in it. That way it didn’t burn the leaves but it also was getting some light
